Oscar de la Hoya destroyed Ricardo Mayorga

(May 6, 2006)
Oscar de la Hoya destroyed Ricardo Mayorga, who was considered by many as the most dangerous fighter in the sport, via a 6th-round stoppage Saturday night in front of 13,000 fans at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.

De la Hoya’s lucrative career may go on even longer as stopped Ricardo Mayorga in what looked like his best performance in years. Oscar’s left hook showed no signs of ring-rust when he dropped Mayorga with his trademark punch in the opening minute of the fight. The tough, cigarette-smoking Mayorga returned to his feet only to be greeted with a barrage of punches, but the Nicaraguan fired back with his trademark wild punches.

There wasn’t a moment in the fight where it appeared as if Mayorga stood a chance against de la Hoya. In the sixth round, Oscar continued his onslaught and refused to stop throwing punches until Mayorga went down for a third time at 1:25 of the sixth, forcing referee Jay Nady to call a halt to the bout.

"No matter what, I was going to stand up to him, let him know right away that I was here to fight," De La Hoya said. "I had to show the bully that I wasn't going to back down. He fought recklessly, but I stood my ground, and he saw I wouldn't back down."

De la Hoya has one last fight in mind and it’s scheduled for September. Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Winky Wright, and Felix Trinidad are amongst the fighters Oscar is considering for his farewell bout.

El Matador vs The Golden Boy

World Boxing Council super welterweight champion Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga confirmed today that he will step into the ring against “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya to defend his title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and on HBO Pay-Per-View on Saturday night.

Mayorga sent word to members of the media asking them to join him at his 3 p.m workout at the Las Vegas Boxing Club, just off the Las Vegas Strip, to make his announcement.

“I have decided to fight,” Mayorga said. “I’m a man and I will defend my World Boxing Council super welterweight title against Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday night.”

The Nicaraguan bomber added emphatically: “Look out. I’m going to knock Oscar out in less than six rounds.”

Mayorga’s promoter, Don King, was very happy to hear Mayorga’s comments.

“I commend Ricardo Mayorga for doing the right thing,” King said. “That’s what I told him to do all along. Now he just needs to knock out The Golden Boy and the world will be his oyster.”
